Everyone faced challenges this year and some endured great loss. But out of the trials of a global pandemic and the ashes of a catastrophic fire, there is hope, creativity, innovation, connection, compassion and growth. Let’s bring these lessons into 2021 as we embrace a new beginning.

A New Normal

The coronavirus pandemic flipped the script on life in Phoenix and the Rogue Valley. In January, it was inconceivable that virtual meetings would happen daily, and our homes would morph into offices, gyms and classrooms. Everyone’s lives and responsibilities shifted as we navigated a new way of living and working.

Businesses found new ways to safely interact with customers while providing the same excellent service. Some businesses even produced personal protective equipment for local hospitals. Every day, the Rogue Valley’s pioneering spirit was on full display.

The Day Everything Changed

As businesses and people paved the way for a new normal, life was upended again.

The Almeda Fire brought devastation to Phoenix and its surrounding areas. Businesses and homes were destroyed. People fled from flames and took refuge with family and friends.

As flames subsided, the community united. Shelters and donation centers popped up overnight. The continued donations — food, gift cards, clothes, toiletries, furniture and much more — to those impacted by the fire, is a testament to the character of our residents. It is that heart and soul which holds our neighborhoods together.

Nearly four months later, there is little doubt a tremendous amount of work lies ahead. And it is the strength of our community that will bring the Rogue Valley back from the ashes.

When the smoke cleared, there was no hesitation to lift each other up. And today, that determination is as strong as ever. When our neighbors need help, support and comfort, our community will continue to give. Shouldered on the strength of those who lost so much and with the support of their neighbors, Phoenix will rebuild.

Hope & New Beginnings

2020 was an unprecedented year for Southern Oregon.

But we challenge everyone to remember the good parts of 2020: new businesses opened, everyday people who became heroes, children’s chalk art on the sidewalks, drive by birthday celebrations, time spent outside, and new family traditions.

Here’s to 2021, Phoenix, and the good that is in store for all of us.

We look forward to the year ahead, and sharing the heart and soul of the Rogue Valley with old friends and new, and with people from near and far.
