When warm spring weather arrives in Southern Oregon, it’s time to take your adventures outside and explore the beautiful valley.

Only about an hour from Phoenix, Mill Creek Falls is the perfect day trip. Whether you start the day by shopping in Phoenix or buying takeout to enjoy when you arrive at the waterfall, a visit to Mill Creek Falls is a must.

History of the Falls

Mill Creek Falls is located just outside the small town of Prospect. The town was settled in 1882, so it’s likely the falls were discovered around that time, but it’s unknown by whom or when.

These stunning falls hurtle 173 feet into the Rogue River Gorge — an alluring sight to approaching visitors. Also, the falls don’t change much from season to season, so it’s a good destination to visit any time of year.

Trail Details

The trail is rated at a moderate difficulty, about 3.2 miles roundtrip and lasts 2-3 hours. Additionally, the lower elevation and easy access make it a popular place to visit in the spring and summer.

Beginning by the Southwest Campground, the trail goes through red fir forest to West Sulphur Creek. At the 0.2 mile mark, a bridge makes it easy to cross the creek. The trail then continues up a steep hillside before reaching a beautiful slope covered in wildflowers. 1.5 miles into the hike, the trail descends into an overlook of Mill Creek Falls.

When you arrive at the falls, the pristine creek water cascades down almost 100 feet — a gorgeous sight to behold. To stay safe, onlookers should stay behind the guardrails at the overlook area.

Directions to the Trailhead

From the southwest entrance, go 0.1 miles to the Kohm Yah-mah-nee Visitor Center parking area. The trailhead is on the east side behind the amphitheater. A paved walkway from the Southwest Campground goes by the trailhead.

How To Get There

  • Follow Highway 62 south from Crater Lake.
  • Turn east on Mill Creek Road, about 2/3 of a mile north of the highway’s crossing of the Rogue River.
  • Follow Mill Creek Road through town for 1.5 miles to the marked trailhead.
  • You will see the falls after hiking slightly less than half a mile down the trail.
